Pilosocereus azureus
The Blue Torch Cactus (Pilosocereus azureus) is a stunning blue cactus native to Brazil. It is a tall pillar cactus reaching 10-30 feet tall depending on the conditions it’s grown in. This cactus has a dramatic blue stem that turns more blue with age and golden spines that turn grey with age. It is a fast growing cactus but will be windowsill size for years before needing to be moved to a larger spot and is a great indoor cactus.
AKA: Blue Torch Cactus, Tree Cactus, Pilosocereus pachycladus, Blue Columnar Cactus
Light: Bright indirect to full direct sun. The more sun the more blue the stem.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering. Water less frequently in the winter and more when it’s actively growing in the summer. Water slowly and evenly until water pours out the drainage holes; discard excess to avoid root rot.
Humidity: Dry air to average home humidity.
Toxicity: Non-toxic however the spines are dangerous and should be kept out of reach of pets and children.
Potting Medium: Fast-draining and fast-drying cactus soil.
Additional Care: Repot using tongs or wrap in newspaper or blankets. Watering too frequently is the most common cause of death so be sure to water sparingly and never allow to sit in water.
