Rubber Tree

The rubber tree (Ficus elastica) is perfect for making a bold statement. It’s durability, adaptability and easy care are a huge bonus on top of its beauty. Native to South and Southeast Asia, it can grow to heights of 130 feet with some reaching 200 feet. Indoors it can reach 10 feet tall if given the right conditions. It is easily recognized by its thick broad oval shaped leaves. Traditionally rubber trees have dark green leaves but some are nearly black or have variegations of pink, red, cream, light green or yellow.

Rubber Tree

AKA: Rubber Plant, Rubber Fig

Light: Tolerates low light but prefers medium to bright light. Direct morning sun is okay and won’t burn the leaves.

Watering: Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Water slowly and evenly until water comes out the drainage hole; discard excess.

Humidity: Thrives in normal home humidity but also does well in high humidity.

Toxicity: Mildly toxins to cats, dogs and humans.

Potting Mix: Regular and well draining.

Additional Care: Dust the large leaves regularly. Prune is it becomes too tall or leggy; this promotes bushier growth.
