Sage

Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean. It is commonly used around the holidays and is great when paired with chicken. It comes in many varieties and colors and has velvety leaves. Sage grows round and bush like, grows up to 2-3 feet tall and 18-24 inches wide, and the flowers attract bees and butterflies. It is great for planting in the garden, flower beds or containers. Sage is one of the few herbs that retains its flavor after flowering and the larger the leaves/plant grow, the stronger the flavor.

Light: medium to full sun; be sure it receives a minimum of 6-8 hours of sun daily or place in a South facing window indoors

Water: sage is very drought tolerant so allow the soil to dry out completely before watering and be sure that it has proper drainage.

Potting Mix: well draining

Toxicity: edible for humans; non-toxic to cats and dogs

Fertilizer: don’t over fertilize sage as it will have a less intense flavor; fertilize only a couple times throughout the growing season

Additional Care: To harvest, clip just above the spot where two leaves meet. Prune half of the plant at the most to maintain size and shape. Great mosquito repellant.
